Tell me a little about yourself: My favorite color is blue. My favorite dessert is cake. I love miniature things. I play with my food and sometimes I draw with it. I write and illustrate children’s books for a living in Toronto. And I LOVE TO READ.

When you were my age, did you like to read?
Some of my favorites:
Charlotte’s Web
Little House On The Prairie books
Ramona The Pest books
A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L’Engle

What was your favorite story? That’s a hard question to answer! I had many favorite stories, and which ones were my favorite changed depending on what was happening in my life at the time.

How do you get your ideas? Sometimes they just come to me and sometimes I purposely sit down and think up book ideas. I always try to carry a notebook around with me, just in case!

Is it hard to write/illustrate a book? It depends on the day. Some days my answer would be “No, it’s going wonderfully!” and other days it might be, “YES, IT’S VERY HARD!”

Do you have a favorite among the books you have written/illustrated? So far I’ve only written and illustrated one book, WHERE ARE MY BOOKS? but now I’m working on my second. And so far, I like my second book more than the first!

What author do you really like right now? I just finished reading some fun middle grade novels by Jess Keating about a girl who lives in a zoo! You can find out more about her books at http://jesskeating.com/books.

What advice do you have for a kid who wants to be an author? Read a LOT. Read constantly, read all kinds of books. When you love a book, read it again and figure out what made you love it so much. If you don’t like a book, think about why you didn’t like it.

Also, try to write something every day. Carry around a notebook and jot down ideas. Don’t worry about making your writing perfect the first time. The more you write, the better you’ll get.
